インターネット上には Wikipedia という、大変重宝する多言語の百科事典があり、日々、項目の内容が充実され、また、項目数自体も増えている。既存の百科事典と違うところは、現代的な現象、事象が項目として載っていることだ。なので、海外で人気の出た、アニメ・マンガのタイトルや時には登場するキャラクターの項目まで外国語版の Wikipedia には追加されることがある。
英語の Wikipedia には、Naruto の項目も、Shikamaru の項目も本日現在存在している。両者とも英語版だけでなく、ほかに、Naruto は33ヶ国語、Shikamaru は7ヶ国語の Wikipedia で項目があることが、当該項目のページの左側のメニューの下の方の "in other languages" の欄を見るとわかる。
Naruto の項目には、shogi という単語は見当たらない。だが、shikamaru の項目には、shogi という単語がかなりある。本日現在の説明で、shogi という単語を含んだ部分を引用する（太字による強調は筆者による。なお、Wikipedia の項目の説明は、削除されたり、改変されることがあることをお断りしておく。本日現在と書いているのはそのためである）。
Shikamaru is the sort of unenthusiastic person who would rather take a nap than get excited over something and likes the thinking games that older men are usually into, such as Shogi and Go.

Later, he played shogi with Asuma. They talked about who the pieces represented. Shikamaru was said to be the knight, a piece that does not possess much power, but makes up for it by taking advantage of its unique ability to move over and around the enemy.
英語の Wikipedia で Shikamaru の項目を参照した人は、上記のように、shogi という単語が使われた部分を読むことになる。また、Wikipedia の英語版には shogi の項目もあり、そこへもハイパーリンクされているので、shogi がどんなゲームか知らなかった人でもすぐに shogi とはどんなゲームだかわかるようになっている。
Shikamasu の項目の別の言語の説明も眺めてみた。shogi という単語が見えるのは、スペイン語の shikamaru の項目とポルトガル語の shikamaru の項目。これも引用してみる。
最初はスペイン語版より。

本日現在は上記がすべてだが、時間がたつにつれて、shikamaru の項目はさらに多言語化されるし、また、shogi という単語もその説明のページに載っていくものと思われる。
このように、Naruto のキャラクターの Shikamaru によって、shogi という言葉だけではなく、shogi というゲームがどんなゲームであることが、Wikipedia で Shikamaru の項目を参照した人にかなり正確に伝わっている可能性が高い。
将棋界では、毎年9月に、将棋の普及に尽力した個人、団体に大山賞が贈呈される。筆者は、アニメのキャラクターに授賞することがあってもいいのではないかと思っている。
