赤西仁氏が英語でPacific Citizen誌のインタビューに答えキアヌ・リーブス氏と将棋を指したことを示唆

Pacific Citizen というサンフランシスコの日系社会の雑誌から出発し、現在は Web Magazine として米国のアジア系住民を主な読者としている Pacific Citizen で、リポーターのNalea J. Ko氏が１２月２１日にインタビューしたものが載っている。インタビューはすべて英語で行われたようだ。そのなかで将棋について触れている部分を抜き出してみる。

Can you tell me about your role as Chikara in the upcoming movie “47 Ronin”?

I’m a samurai, one of the “47 Ronin.” I play the son of the leader of the group. I am basically the only one that understands Keanu’s character, Kai, since he’s considered an outsider. So we are together a lot. During down time, we would play Shogi, and Japanese chess — a lot. He’s very comfortable to be around.

What has it been like to work with Keanu Reeves?

He’s a cool guy. He really makes the working atmosphere comfortable. Definitely helped keep me from being nervous.

読売新聞の英語版 The Daily Yomiuri に次の記事を英訳した記事が出た。

京王百貨店新宿店（東京）内の「丸善」では、３０種類を超す日めくりや週めくりのカレンダーを扱う。
「ＮＨＫテレビミニ英会話　とっさのひとこと」（１８９０円）は、旅行などで役立つ会話が学べる。「日めくり詰め将棋カレンダー」（日本女子プロ将棋協会編、２０００円）は、詰め将棋の問題が毎日掲載され、裏面には解説がある。

The Maruzen bookshop at the Keio department store in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, sells about 30 types of calenders, including "NHK's useful English conversational phrases" (1,890 yen). The calendar contains English expressions useful for travel and other situations.

The store also stocks the "tsume shogi (Japanese chess) calender" edited by the Ladies Professional Shogi-players' Association of Japan for 2,000 yen. Each day brings a new shogi question, with the answer on the other side of the page.

将棋に絡んだ商品の英語記事が新聞に出るのは珍しい。
