Comparing chess with shogi article is very good article, but the relation between the frequent sacrifices of shogi pieces with Japanese samurai spirit is an exaggeration. It should be an effect from the drop rule instead.

Piece sacrifice to checkmate the king is widely applied in any Chaturanga-derived game: chess, xiangqi, jianggi, and shogi.

Before the drop rule is invented, shogi draw rate must be as high as chess, since they are originated from the same game.
