On July 23 and 24, the 2nd game of 49th Oui-sen 4-win match between Oui Fukaura and Challenger Yoshiharu Habu took place at Hotel Foresta in Toyota City of Aichi Prefecture. Fukaura was Sente player and won the game in 109 moves to tie the score in 1-1. They say Habu led the position in the middlegame but Fukaura turned it around sometime in the endgame.
The diagram below is the resignation one when Sente's King escaped to 8f from 7g. Sente's King will be mated while Gote's King is in threatmate at the diagram. The possible variations after that position would be as followings;
In any case, Gote was hopeless.S*7e Kx9e G-8d K-9f P*9d(P*9e is illegal move due to mate with a dropping pawn) S*5c K-4a Lx4b+ Gx4b Rx4b+(mate)
S*7e Kx9e g-8d K-9f +Rx3i S*5c K-4a Lx4b+ Gx4b Rx4b+(mate, replayable by clicking the arrow in the right direction under the diagram)

LOL That sucks for Habu! He would have a mate if the rule allows a pawn drop!
Never quite understood why the rule where a pawn cannot be dropped to mate a king was implemented. In this case it made the difference between victory and defeat.

I do not now why the rule of illegal mate with pawn drop has been made, either. But it makes unpromotion a very good move in some cases.
