Emerging with the title was former long-time Floridian International Master (IM) Larry Kaufman, now of Maryland. An M.I.T. graduate in Economics, he became successful as a stockbroker and trader. He also is known for being one of the best non-Japanese Shogi players in the world. Shogi is a form of chess popular in Japan in which captured enemy men may be "dropped" onto the board as allies.
